ASTRAGAIUS

Astragalus is a plant native to Asia. The Chinese name of the herb, huang qi, means "yellow leader", because the root is yellow and it is considered to be one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. The part of the plant used medicinally is the root.In traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus is usually made into a decoction - the roots are boiled in water then removed. It's often combined with other herbs, such as ginseng. Astragalus can also be found in supplement form at some health food stores.

BILBERRY

The bilberry is a native species of Europe and temperate regions of North America. The herb grows well in heath land, on moors and meadows, and also in moist undergrowth in lightly wooded areas. Bilberry is harvested during the summer, the fruits and leaves are collected from plants in the wild. Due to the fruit sugar found in them, ripe bilberries have a mild laxative action. Dried bilberries are markedly binding and possess an antibacterial action. An herbal decoction prepared from the dried bilberries is effective in the treatment of diarrhea affecting children. The bilberry decoction is also used as an herbal mouthwash in treating various oral disorders and throat problems.

ECHINACEA

Echinacea, being indigenous to North America, was thus widely used by Indians as a medication against colds, flu, and other infections, applied topically it could cure different wounds (cuts, burns, and insect bites). Actually, preparations made of this plant were believed to be a cure-all medicine, able to heal any disease from cough to cancer.All the conducted trials made the scientists state that though Echinacea itself does not cure diseases, it helps the body resist and fight the illnesses, making it stronger. People who take this plants preparations, tend to fall ill less often, experience milder, symptoms, and recover sooner.

EPHEDRA

Ephedra sinica is an herb with a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for asthma, bronchitis, allergies and cold and flu symptoms.During the 80s, ephedra became popular outside of traditional Chinese medicine for weight loss and to enhance sports performance. Its popularity continued to grow, and it was found in many nutritional supplements marketed for weight loss and performance enhancement until supplements containing ephedra were banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006.

GINKO BILOBA

Ginkgo is one of the oldest living tree species. The extract of ginkgo leaves is used medicinally in North America, where it's one of the most popular medicinal herbs, and many other countries around the world. In traditional Chinese medicine, the seeds of the ginkgo tree are used.Ginkgo leaves are believed to contain compounds that thin blood and help to improve muscle tone in the walls of blood vessels. Garlic actually may be effective in slowing the development of atherosclerosis and seems to be able to modestly reduce blood pressure.

GINSENG

GINSENG is a fleshy rooted herb, native to well drained, cool, shaded hardwood forests. Ginseng does not grow in full sunlight, so the natural place to plant it is in hardwood forests, where the trees provide the needed shade. Ginseng is a perennial plant, but unlike other perennials, it lies dormant some years and does not grow new tops every year. The root does not die, but lies dormant until the following year. Ginseng is one of the most sought after herbs on the market. The future for growing ginseng looks promising for many years as more and more is being used now in the United States in addition to the Orient. All Health Food stores, drug stores, and even small gas stations now sell it in capsules, powdered, etc. The demand keeps growing every year.

Most studies show that St. John's wort may help treat mild-to-moderate depression, and has fewer side effects than most other prescription antidepressants.

VALERIAN

Valerian has been used to ease insomnia, anxiety, and nervous restlessness since the second century A.D. It became popular in Europe in the 17th century. It has also been suggested to treat stomach cramps. Some research -- though not all -- does suggest that valerian may help some people with insomnia. Germany's Commission E approved valerian as an effective mild sedative and the United States Food and Drug Administration listed valerian as "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS).Scientists aren't sure how valerian works, but they believe it increases the amount of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid(GABA)in the brain.
